Illinois ranks number 6 on the list of states with the highest number of licensed drivers. Even with a top rated public transportation system and thousands of taxis on the roads, more than 10 million Illinois drivers take to the roads each day. Auto insurance companies understand the increased risk congested roadways pose, so auto insurance rates will be higher in certain states than they are in others. Currently, the average annual auto insurance premium in the space of Illinois is $1,200.

Tips For Saving Money On Your Auto Insurance

by admin on February 27, 2011

Auto insurance is one of the necessary evils. We are all required to carry insurance if we occupy a vehicle; there is no way to find around it. It can also get quite expensive, no matter how kindly of a driver you are! So why not get the best deal on your insurance?

Before getting a quote, understand what auto insurance is. Auto insurers throw around terms like comprehensive coverage and collision coverage. Collision coverage pays for harm to the insured vehicle when it hits or is hit by another vehicle or object. Comprehensive coverage is for injure or loss to the insured vehicle caused by something other than collision. This would include theft, fire, windstorms, flood and vandalism.

When getting rate quotes, know the policy and type of coverage you currently carry. Also, when getting a quote from different companies, make obvious you are asking for the same coverage. Don’t ask for a quote with a $500 deductible with one company and a $1000 deductible with another. This will affect the quote they give you. You can’t compare quotes if you are asking for a different type of coverage.

Here are some easy tips on finding the best deal available.

If you own a home or other insurable items (such as jet skis, boats, motorcycles, mobile homes/campers) explore if you can collect a discount for having them insured through the same company. See if the company also offers life insurance. Most companies will give you a discount if you carry more than one type of insurance with them.

For students, most companies will give you a discount for getting gracious grades. They may also give you a discount for taking a driver’s education course.

Maintain a clean driving portray. Speeding tickets, traffic violations and accidents can greatly increase your insurance rates. Keep track of your driving record, making sure that your older offenses are taken off and that your insurance reflects that. Some insurance companies are now offering discounts or not increasing premiums for an at-fault accident if you haven’t had one with in a certain time-frame (example: no at fault accident within the last 5 years)

Don’t carry unnecessary insurance. You are required to carry full coverage if you have a loan on the vehicle. There is no way to get around that. However, if you don’t have a loan, then you may not need full coverage. If your vehicle is older and not worth a lot, then don’t pay the extra money in insurance premiums to have more coverage. Just get liability coverage and save the extra to put towards another vehicle should you get in an accident with the current one.

Go on-line. There are many on-line companies that offer multiple rate quotes from different companies. Not only will this will cut down on the amount of searching you will have to do, whether on-line or phone calls, it will help see the top companies that have the lowest rate.
